“Applying is only half the job.”
Where the story began
Oscar had strong academics, but recognised that grades alone would not make him distinctive in a competitive degree-apprenticeship market. He spent the period before recruitment learning what quantity surveying actually involved and building a visible professional direction around the built environment.
The behaviour behind the outcome
He used LinkedIn to create conversations with apprentices and professionals, researched employers before applying, wrote publicly about what he was learning and deliberately looked for real-world construction exposure while travelling.
What an employer could actually see
His evidence included international construction exposure with Gleeds in Peru, volunteering, industry conversations, public writing for Building Magazine and a sustained LinkedIn trail showing genuine interest in the sector. He ultimately secured five degree-apprenticeship offers and chose Gleeds.
What this case illustrates
Visibility can create recognition, evidence can create credibility and conversations can create access before a formal application is submitted.
This Spotlight is a research case study, not a testimonial and not a claim that the same actions will produce the same outcome for every candidate.
